The State Comptroller's Office has revealed a severe situation within the Bnei Brak Municipality, detailing a pattern of ongoing neglect and disregard for resident complaints regarding sanitation and safety hazards. In 2026, dozens of complaints were filed by city residents concerning these issues, yet the municipality has consistently failed to address them.

Carmit Fenton, director of the Public Complaints Commissioner's office, sent an unusual letter to the Director-General of the Ministry of Interior, demanding intervention to ensure the municipality addresses the complaints and rectifies the deficiencies. Investigations by the Commissioner's office indicate a persistent pattern of inaction on hazards and a disregard for citizen concerns.

Residents have reported prolonged periods without waste removal, leading to significant garbage accumulation that attracts pests and rodents. They also complain about neglected public spaces and dilapidated, inaccessible, and dangerous pathways. The Commissioner's office has repeatedly warned municipal officials of their obligation to immediately fix these serious issues, which pose risks to public health and safety.

Fenton's letter to the Ministry of Interior emphasized that the municipality's conduct harms residents and violates legal and administrative principles. She requested that the municipality's handling of these issues be given significant weight when assessing the city's overall stability, particularly its financial and administrative soundness. This appeal comes amid a turbulent period for Bnei Brak, which in late August received a stern warning from the Ministry of Interior regarding a cumulative deficit of tens of millions of shekels, with threats of severe administrative measures if budgetary balance is not achieved soon.
