Prominent Imam Calls for Unusual Vote by Israeli Arabs Amid Security Fears

Dr. Muhammad Khaled Amara, an imam from the village of Zalafa in the Triangle region and a member of the Global Union of Muslim Scholars, has issued an unusual call for Israeli Arabs to vote in the upcoming elections. Amara, known for his extremist views and past bans from the Temple Mount, has historically advocated for a complete boycott of Israeli Knesset elections.

In a video posted on the Al-Jarmiq media outlet's Instagram page, Amara explained his shift in stance, citing the events of October 7th, what he termed 'settler attacks,' the distribution of weapons, and proposed legislation for the death penalty for terrorists as creating a 'real mortal danger.'

He described the current government as 'fascist right-wing' and argued that these circumstances necessitate a re-evaluation of participation in the political process. Amara stated that the decision to overcome religious and ideological prohibitions against engaging with state institutions reflects the deep pressure and fear among these groups regarding right-wing policies and the strengthening of personal security for Israeli citizens.

The imam's revised ruling and willingness to set aside religious and ideological objections to participating in state institutions, he believes, demonstrate the significant anxiety felt by these groups concerning the current government's policies and the enhanced personal security of Israel's citizens.
