Masa Programs Director Highlights Unforgettable Israeli Experience
Reuven Greenberg, director of Russian-speaking programs for Masa Israel Journey, emphasized the organization's core principle: 'Live like a local.' He explained that participants from abroad study, intern, and work in Israel alongside Israelis, gaining a unique perspective and professional development. Greenberg spoke at the Global Aliyah Live Summit on September 8, an international online event focused on repatriation to Israel.
Masa, founded 22 years ago at the initiative of then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, aims to provide young Jews aged 18-40, eligible under the Law of Return, with an extended living experience in Israel without immediate aliya (immigration) obligation. The program offers around 40 specialized tracks for Russian-speaking participants out of over 300 available, catering to goals like intensive Hebrew study, career advancement, academic pursuits, or professional internships. New options include six-month paid work opportunities under official work visas, and even recreational programs like surfing in Eilat.
Greenberg detailed the 'Live like a local' ethos, where participants reside in rented apartments, manage their own households, and navigate Israeli society, fostering deep immersion. This approach, he stated, leads to informed decisions about immigration. Statistics show over 90% of Russian-speaking Masa participants ultimately choose to repatriate.
A five-year study by Masa indicated that its graduates achieve higher incomes, career success, more social connections, and a greater sense of belonging compared to typical immigrants. A significant 93% of surveyed alumni recommend the Masa experience to others.
The Global Aliyah Live Summit, organized by YnetGlobal and Vesti, was conducted in Russian, English, and French. It featured discussions on repatriation with officials including Minister of Aliyah and Integration Ofer Sofer and Jewish Agency Chairman Doron Almog. The event was supported by various Israeli governmental and non-governmental organizations.
