UK Chief Rabbi Slams Labour Sanctions Against Israel as 'Dark Day'

Britain's Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, has strongly condemned the Labour government's decision to impose sanctions against Israel and the West Bank, calling it a "dark day for British Jewry." In a statement released Tuesday evening, Rabbi Mirvis expressed disappointment that the government chose to disregard the deep concerns raised by the community.

He argued that the announced measures serve as a political endorsement of false anti-Israel rhetoric and those with a "dangerous obsession" towards the Jewish state. Mirvis warned that these sanctions would inadvertently strengthen the very extremism they claim to combat, rather than promote peace or security.

"These gesture politics only feed the increasingly hostile discourse towards Israel," Mirvis stated, adding that such policies and penalties encourage those who use hatred as a weapon against Jews, both domestically and internationally. He emphasized that these sanctions were particularly ill-timed, occurring during the High Holy Days when the Jewish community feels more vulnerable to rising extremism.
