UK Chief Rabbi Warns Sanctions on Israeli Settlements Could Spark Wider Boycott

Britain's Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, has cautioned that proposed UK sanctions targeting Israeli activities in the West Bank could escalate into a de facto boycott of Israel and fuel antisemitism within the UK. Jewish community leaders expressed concerns to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak that measures ostensibly aimed at settlements might rapidly broaden into a wider boycott, increasing pressure, exclusion, and hostility towards British Jews identified with Israel.

Leaders from the Board of Deputies of British Jews, the Jewish Leadership Council, and other organizations met with Sunak at Downing Street. They warned that "broad and unfocused" actions could legitimize boycott movements, leading to the "stigmatization and exclusion of British Jews." They urged the government to ensure its policies do not harm Jewish connections to religiously and historically significant sites in Israel and the West Bank.

Jewish media outlets have echoed these concerns, with articles in "The Jewish Chronicle" arguing that government pressure on Israel can quickly blur the lines between the Israeli government, Israelis, and British Jews. One writer accused the Prime Minister of promoting policies that could increase hostility towards Jews, despite assurances of enhanced security.

However, the British Jewish community is not unified on this issue. The left-wing Jewish organization "Yachad" supports sanctions related to settlements, and the Board of Deputies rejected calls to take action against its representatives for their stance, emphasizing legitimate political diversity within British Jewry.

The UK government has refuted claims that its policy is antisemitic, with Downing Street stating that Israel remains an "important strategic partner" and that security and political relations continue. The government also highlighted its significant investment in protecting Jewish institutions and combating antisemitism.

The central question for community leaders is whether the government can maintain the distinction it promises between opposing Israeli government policy and a broad boycott of Israel and its supporters, fearing that this distinction may not be clear on the British street.
