Family Demands Reopening of Eldar Dayan Death Investigation Amid Police Failures

The family of Eldar Dayan, who died under unclear circumstances, is demanding a renewed investigation into his death, protesting outside the Dimona police station. Dayan's family claims the initial investigation was mishandled by the police, leading to significant failures and a "devastating outcome." They are seeking accountability and a thorough re-examination of the events that led to his demise.

Dayan went missing, and his mother initially hoped a body found was not her son's, but the family later confirmed it was him. Following an autopsy, he was buried in Eilat. Two friends who were with him, Omri Peretz and Maksim Berberman, were questioned, and five young men were arrested on suspicion of involvement in his death but were later released.

The investigation into Dayan's disappearance and death was conducted by three police units: Dimona police, investigators from the Central District, and officers from the Ramat Hasharon station. The police faced severe criticism for the prolonged delay in finding Dayan's body, especially since it was discovered in an area where searches had already taken place.

Conflicting accounts from individuals questioned, including those arrested, complicated the investigation. After its conclusion, many questions remained unanswered, including the cause of Dayan's death, the path he took before his body was found, and whether human responsibility was involved.

"The way the investigation into Eldar was managed is a testament to the failure of the Israel Police," stated Sapir Pardo, the family's attorney. She added that the family "will do everything to have the investigation into Eldar reopened, especially after the Israel Police itself admitted to failures in the investigation." The police stated that they began search operations immediately after receiving the report of his disappearance, though it is estimated these searches began after he had already died.
