Arab Israeli Lawmaker Praises Ousted Haredi Colleagues

Member of Knesset (MK) Ahmad Tibi, an Arab Israeli lawmaker, has expressed regret over the ousting of veteran Knesset members Moshe Gafni and Uri Maklev, both from the United Torah Judaism party. In a brief interview with Kikar HaShabbat, Tibi described the decision as a loss of two talented lawmakers.

Tibi lauded Gafni, stating that despite their opposing political stances, Gafni was one of the most decent lawmakers he had known. He noted that Gafni never made racist remarks against the Arab public and showed empathy for the needs of Arab society, while remaining determined to serve his own constituents. Tibi mentioned he has known Gafni since entering the Knesset in 1999.

Regarding Maklev, Tibi called him one of the most diligent Knesset members, finding his removal "fishy" and unfair. While declining to directly interfere in the decision, Tibi reiterated that those who removed them had lost two capable MKs.

Tibi also commented on the upcoming elections, stating that polls predict his party, the Joint List, will win nine seats. He expressed hope for increased Arab voter turnout, which he believes will lead to political change and a government replacement. He urged the Arab public to vote for the Joint List, calling it essential for altering the political reality.

Finally, Tibi addressed the conscription law, noting that Arab parties had not significantly intervened in the issue for years. He stated his current goal is to "mobilize all peace forces" to achieve Israeli-Palestinian peace, alongside combating crime, racism, and ethnic cleansing.
