Ben-Gvir Touts Gottlieb Amid Netanyahu List, Clashes With Legal Advisor

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has highlighted Tali Gottlieb, a candidate strongly associated with his "Otzma Yehudit" party, in response to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's list of protected candidates. Netanyahu's list reportedly includes figures known for their opposition to the judicial system's perceived overreach. Ben-Gvir stated that Gottlieb's inclusion is central to Otzma Yehudit's election platform, emphasizing the fight against the "deep state" and bureaucracy.

Ben-Gvir also launched a sharp attack on Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, accusing her of overstepping her authority and believing she is the prime minister. He asserted that he would not appoint Israeli Police officers according to her wishes, calling her "confused" and suggesting she should be fired.

This confrontation occurs amidst a significant dispute between Ben-Gvir and Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai over appointments within the police force. Ben-Gvir has reportedly refused to approve police appointments during the election period, fearing the commissioner might try to appoint officers aligned with Baharav-Miara's preferences.

The Police Commissioner's office stated that Shabtai will proceed with the appointments and expects the minister's support. However, according to the law, senior police appointments require the National Security Minister's approval, meaning Shabtai cannot finalize these appointments without Ben-Gvir's consent. Earlier, it was reported that Shabtai planned to meet with the Attorney General to clarify that he operates independently and is not subordinate to the minister.
