Nir Berkovich Denied Coaching Jobs Due to Sibling Rivalry, Claims Brother Eyal

Eyal Berkovich, a prominent Israeli football figure, asserted that his brother, Nir Berkovich, is being unfairly overlooked for coaching positions in Israel's second-tier Liga Leumit because of their familial connection. Nir Berkovich has been without a coaching role since leaving Hapoel Ra'anana at the start of last season.

Eyal Berkovich argued that Nir's professional record demonstrates his capabilities, citing his success in leading teams like Rishon LeZion, Ness Ziona, Umm al-Fahm, and Ahi Nazareth to promotions or strong performances. He highlighted Nir's ability to achieve results even when taking over struggling clubs, such as Ra'anana, which was second to last in the standings when he arrived.

Berkovich also addressed criticisms of his brother's management style, acknowledging it's not perfect but emphasizing that players consistently express strong loyalty to Nir. He contrasted Nir's lack of job offers with the continued employment of less successful coaches, attributing this disparity directly to their relationship. "Why? Because he is my brother," Eyal stated.

He further explained that Nir's desire for complete professional autonomy clashes with the reality of club owners in Liga Leumit often seeking to interfere in technical decisions. Eyal used the example of Ironi Kiryat Shmona, suggesting that if the owner wants his grandson to play, the grandson will play, implying a similar dynamic of external influence that Nir struggles with.
