Acclaimed Tel Aviv Restaurant Closes After One Year for New Venture
Tel Aviv's culinary scene is facing another setback with the surprise closure of "Gastro-Mechanico," a highly regarded restaurant located on Chenalov Street in the southern part of the city. The establishment, considered one of the past year's most promising and talked-about culinary destinations, is expected to shut its doors soon.
Owned by Chef Pinchas (Pini) Melotnik, the intimate restaurant garnered widespread praise from food critics and enthusiasts for its innovative menu, which blended advanced cooking techniques with local ingredients. Despite its peak popularity, the decision has been made to close the establishment.
The reason for this unexpected move is not financial difficulty, but rather an exceptional professional opportunity. According to a report on N12, Melotnik received an offer he couldn't refuse: to lead a massive and ambitious culinary project with significant financial backing, currently being developed in Rishon LeZion.
Melotnik's surprising departure from Tel Aviv follows behind-the-scenes drama concerning the new project. Initially, the project was slated to be led by renowned Chef Tomer Agai, former co-owner of the iconic "Santa Caterina" restaurant, which closed in 2024 due to heavy debts and damage sustained during the Swords of Iron War. After the developers decided to terminate their agreement with Agai, Melotnik was identified as the ideal candidate.
The generous offer and the project's scale ultimately convinced Melotnik to take the helm, leading him to bid farewell to the culinary gem he established in South Tel Aviv. It remains to be seen whether he can replicate his unique magic in the new venture in the Shephelah region.
