Moshe Gafni Reflects on Knesset Career After Election Snub

Moshe Gafni, chairman of the Degel HaTorah movement, has penned a farewell letter to party representatives across Israel, reflecting on nearly four decades of parliamentary service. The letter comes shortly after Gafni was removed from Degel HaTorah's slate for the upcoming Knesset elections.

In his message, Gafni expressed gratitude for his "mission" and spoke of his efforts to advance the interests of the Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) public. He cited his work on legislation, parliamentary debates, and assisting thousands of individuals, emphasizing his commitment to preserving Haredi education and the autonomy of yeshiva students.

Gafni recalled his initial call to public service 38 years ago by Rabbi Elazar Menachem Shach, founder of Degel HaTorah, and stated he always followed the guidance of Torah leaders. He highlighted his focus on assisting those in need, referencing an early instruction from Rabbi Shach to help a widow facing eviction.

He also addressed the ongoing tensions with the judicial system, describing it as an "unprecedented period" where the Supreme Court and legal advisors have declared "war" on the Haredi public and its way of life. Gafni asserted that he and his colleagues have acted to protect yeshiva students based on the directives of their rabbis.

Notably, Gafni did not directly address the circumstances of his ouster from the party list, nor did he criticize the decision-makers. Instead, he concluded by urging Degel HaTorah representatives to continue their mission with loyalty to Halakha (Jewish law) and Torah scholars, wishing them a good year and praying for the elevation of Torah study and the coming of the Messiah.
