Israeli President Herzog Warns UK Against Sanctions on Settlements

Israeli President Isaac Herzog issued a stern warning to the United Kingdom and any other nations considering trade restrictions on goods from Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria. Speaking on Tuesday, September 8th, Herzog characterized such measures as a "serious miscalculation" and an "interference in the democratic elections of a sovereign state."

Herzog specifically addressed reports that the UK was planning to announce a ban on trade with these settlements. He cautioned that these restrictions could have significant negative repercussions, not only for Israel but also for the Palestinian workers employed in these areas, potentially costing them jobs and business opportunities.

"If this happens and other countries join, I believe it will be a serious miscalculation and a choice to stand on the wrong side of history," Herzog stated, emphasizing that such actions could impact Israel's internal political situation.

He further elaborated on the potential harm to Palestinians, saying, "It will also directly harm Palestinians, depriving them of business opportunities and jobs. Ultimately, it will undermine the interests and national security of free nations."

President Herzog urged foreign governments to abandon economic sanctions and instead pursue dialogue. "Sanctions are not the solution. The solution is dialogue. I appeal to all foreign governments: stop! Turn away from the dead end of sanctions and boycotts and move towards constructive dialogue and cooperation," he concluded.
