Israeli President Herzog Criticizes UK Sanctions on Settlements

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has strongly criticized the United Kingdom's reported plans to impose economic restrictions on Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria. The British government is reportedly considering a ban on trade with settlements and sanctions against companies involved in construction in these areas. President Herzog stated that such measures would be a grave mistake and the wrong side of history, urging foreign governments to abandon boycotts and sanctions, which he described as direct interference in the democratic processes of a sovereign state.

Herzog made these remarks during an event celebrating 30 years of Israel's participation in the European research and innovation program, Horizon Europe. He argued that the anticipated trade and economic restrictions would not benefit either side. Instead, he warned, they would harm the Palestinian population by eliminating jobs and joint businesses, and also damage the security interests of free nations.

According to American media reports, the UK is considering not only trade restrictions on goods from Judea, Samaria, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights but also personal sanctions against individuals and construction firms. In response to these intentions, Israeli Foreign Minister Gidon Saar has already warned that Israel is prepared to take reciprocal measures against the UK if sanctions are applied.

Herzog emphasized that constructive dialogue is the only correct path forward. Earlier, the outlet reported that Israel was awaiting an apology from the Belgian Foreign Ministry.
