Israel's Next Finance Minister: Potential Candidates Emerge

The role of Israel's Finance Minister is exceptionally challenging, particularly due to the immense defense budget, which this year could reach approximately 200 billion shekels, nearly a third of the total state budget of 660 billion shekels. This significant allocation for security, unique among developed nations, adds a layer of complexity to managing the nation's finances, especially after three years of war.

Despite these difficulties, the position remains highly coveted, historically seen as the pinnacle of power. A potential list of candidates for the next finance minister has been compiled, considering that coalition dynamics may lead to the role being filled by someone from a smaller party, as seen with the current minister, Bezalel Smotrich.

Among the potential candidates are Shaul Meridor, former head of the budget department at the Finance Ministry, favored for a professional appointment if the "Yesh Atid" party forms the government. MK Orit Farkash-Hacohen, a lawyer and economist with experience as a minister and chair of the Israel Electric Corporation, is also considered a strong contender. From the Likud party, current Energy Minister Eli Cohen, who has openly expressed his ambition for the finance portfolio, is seen as the most realistic candidate. Former Jerusalem Mayor and tech entrepreneur Nir Barkat, despite past aspirations and Netanyahu's previous consideration, faces challenges due to strained relations with Netanyahu's inner circle.

Other notable figures include Karin Tur-Eyal, a highly regarded professional who previously served as Director-General of the Finance and Transportation Ministries, considered a top choice for the "National Unity" bloc. Avigdor Lieberman, former Finance Minister, is also a strong possibility, leveraging his past experience and political acumen to secure the key economic portfolio. From the left, MK Naama Lazimi is a prominent social-democratic voice, though the likelihood of the finance minister role going to a smaller left-wing party is considered low.

Incumbent Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, despite facing criticism, has managed to pass recent budgets under challenging wartime conditions. However, his chances for reappointment are considered low due to his party's current polling numbers and potential political pressures, even if a right-wing bloc forms the next government. Professor Yaron Zelekha is also mentioned as a potential candidate, contingent on his party's electoral success.
