Finance Minister Smotrich Declares Himself a Realistic Candidate to Lead Israel After Netanyahu

Finance Minister and Religious Zionism Party leader Bezalel Smotrich signaled his political ambitions to lead Israel following Benjamin Netanyahu's era. In a Tuesday interview on Avi Shushan's podcast "Everything Is Open," Smotrich positioned himself as a key contender for national leadership and the right-wing bloc in the long term. He emphasized the extensive experience gained during his current government tenure, stating that serving as finance minister, the third most important role in the cabinet, has prepared him to navigate complex economic and security challenges.

When asked directly if he sees himself running for prime minister after Netanyahu, Smotrich affirmed he is "definitely one of the realistic candidates in the national camp." Addressing skepticism about his party's ability to produce a prime minister due to its sectoral nature, he rejected the notion that Religious Zionism is a niche party, calling such claims deliberate attempts to diminish its influence. He highlighted his inclusive approach during the ongoing war, asserting that his leadership serves all Israeli society, not just his party's base.

Smotrich also defended his investments in Religious Zionist institutions and Hesder yeshivas as contributions to the entire country, noting the sacrifices of their members on the battlefield and in cemeteries. When questioned about the electorate's readiness to support a distinctly religious candidate wearing a kippah, he acknowledged it as a necessary evolving process, rooted in a consistent worldview that inspires trust and stability.
