Deepal S05 Plug-In Hybrid SUV Challenges Market with Value
The Deepal S05 plug-in hybrid SUV has entered the Israeli market, aiming to disrupt the segment with its competitive pricing and extensive features. Priced at 155,000 shekels for the tested trim, it significantly undercuts rivals like the Jaco 7, which starts at 180,000 shekels, and other competitors such as the Dongfeng Fengon E5, Li Auto L6, and BYD Seal U. This aggressive pricing strategy, combined with a spacious interior, premium amenities, and a strong safety rating, positions the S05 as a compelling option for budget-conscious consumers.
The S05 boasts a distinctive design penned by Klaus Zyciora, formerly of Volkswagen, featuring clean lines and proportions that avoid typical "Chinese car" aesthetics. Its dimensions, including a 2.88-meter wheelbase, offer a remarkably spacious cabin, exceeding many segment rivals. Inside, the car features a minimalist dashboard dominated by a 15.4-inch touchscreen, high-quality materials, and comfortable seating. However, the user interface for climate and audio controls, accessed via a touch-sensitive strip, is criticized for being cumbersome, and the lack of physical buttons is noted as a drawback.
In terms of performance, the S05 utilizes a 1.5-liter gasoline engine producing 86 horsepower, paired with a 234-horsepower electric motor, resulting in a combined output of 259 horsepower. The vehicle prioritizes electric power, with the gasoline engine primarily acting as a generator or engaging at higher speeds. During testing, the S05 achieved an impressive 101 kilometers on electric power alone, exceeding its claimed 100 km range. Fuel efficiency in hybrid mode averaged 17.1 kilometers per liter.
Comfort and handling are described as adequate, with the S05 performing better over larger road imperfections than smaller ones. The ride quality improves at higher speeds, though the stock Giti tires are identified as a weak point, impacting both comfort and grip. Despite this, the S05 offers a comprehensive safety package, earning a top 5-star Euro NCAP rating and 8 points from the Israeli Ministry of Transport, including autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. The vehicle comes with a 6-year or 150,000 km warranty for the car and an 8-year or 200,000 km warranty for the battery.
