Modzitz Hassidim Use "Amen" Sign to Coordinate Selichot Prayers

Kikar HaShabbatReligious
Translated & summarized from Kikar HaShabbat by baba
The story · English

Hundreds of Modzitz Hassidim gathered on Saturday night in Bnei Brak for the first Selichot prayers of the season, held in their grand, under-construction synagogue. During the service, attendees were shown the new Holy Ark for the first time. A unique solution was implemented to address a recurring issue during the Hassidic group's Selichot services, which often incorporate numerous melodies and liturgical poems. Previously, the extensive musical interludes sometimes caused a lack of synchronization, with the Rebbe beginning the Kaddish prayer while the congregation was still singing and unaware.

To resolve this, a special cantor stood near the Holy Ark, holding a large sign displaying the words "Amen" and "Y'hei Shmei Raba" (May His Great Name be Blessed). This visual cue allowed the large congregation to know precisely when to stop singing, respond appropriately to the prayers, and then resume their melodies, ensuring a more unified and orderly service.
