Arab Citizens Seek Integration in Israel, Poll Shows
A recent poll indicates a strong desire among Arab citizens of Israel for greater integration into Israeli society and politics, contrasting with the traditional political stances of Arab parties and the views of many Jewish Israelis. While Arab citizens constitute about 22% of Israel's population, their political participation is historically lower, and Arab parties have rarely been full coalition partners, with only one instance of a party joining a coalition without ministerial representation.
The "Israeli Democracy Index" 2025 survey reveals that 90% of Arab respondents believe it is desirable for Arab citizens to integrate into Israeli society. In stark contrast, only 50.5% of Jewish respondents agreed, with 45% opposing such integration. Furthermore, 85% of Arab respondents favored the inclusion of Arab parties in the government, including the appointment of Arab ministers, while nearly two-thirds of Jewish respondents opposed this idea.
Despite this expressed desire for integration, a significant portion of Arab respondents (58.6%) feel that no current party adequately represents their views. This suggests a potential disconnect between the electorate's aspirations and the strategies of Arab political parties, which have historically maintained a distance from the political establishment, partly due to internal disagreements on cooperating with Zionist parties.
