IDF Kills Palestinian Attacker Near Nablus; Israeli Minister Threatens 'Total War'

The Israeli military announced Monday the killing of the individual who carried out a stabbing attack targeting an Israeli near Nablus. The assailant was shot and killed in the Jabal Qumais area, situated between the towns of Beita and Awarta, south of the city. According to the IDF, forces opened fire on the attacker, resulting in his death. Israeli reports indicated the individual attempted to stab an Israeli officer during a pursuit before being shot.

The incident occurs amidst escalating tensions in the West Bank, with increased Israeli military measures and security cordons around Palestinian towns and villages. Following the attack, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz escalated his rhetoric, threatening a "total war" in the West Bank. This would include targeting senior Palestinian Authority officials and their security apparatus, as well as infrastructure.

Katz stated that Israel would not permit a return to what he described as a prolonged intifada scenario. He vowed a broad campaign if armed confrontations occur or if there are indications of preparations for attacks similar to the October 7th events. Potential measures, he added, could involve evacuating residents from towns and villages from which attacks are launched, eliminating militants, and destroying infrastructure, while maintaining Israeli forces in evacuated areas, citing examples from Gaza, Lebanon, and northern West Bank camps.
