Ultra-Orthodox Tech Professionals Join IDF After October 7th Attacks

Two ultra-Orthodox men with backgrounds in high-tech have enlisted in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) following the October 7th Hamas attacks, seeking to contribute their expertise. Identified as 'A' and 'S', both had previously served in yeshivas and later integrated into the tech industry, working on projects involving artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles.

Motivated by the events of October 7th, they decided to enlist under the IDF's "Phase B" program, which allows individuals who received age exemptions to perform military service. They have since accumulated hundreds of reserve duty days, contributing to the Air Force's technological efforts and later to Brigade 228. They aim to bridge the gap between operational challenges faced by soldiers on the ground and technological solutions.

Both men described mixed reactions from their ultra-Orthodox communities, with some families initially hesitant but ultimately supportive. They report encountering overwhelmingly positive responses from both within the military and the secular public, challenging the traditional dichotomy between religious observance and military service. 'A' noted that seeing individuals like themselves, who are married with children and active in their communities, serving in uniform is fostering a significant shift in perception.

'S' recounted enlisting just three days after the birth of his daughter, emphasizing his sense of duty. He also commented on the IDF's accommodations for religious soldiers, noting the availability of kosher food and prayer services, though he himself does not serve in a specifically ultra-Orthodox unit. Their enlistment has reportedly inspired others within the community to consider military service, including full enlistment in various religious tracks.
