Gaza Food Prices Plummet Amid Record Humanitarian Aid Influx

Food prices in the Gaza Strip have seen a significant decline, with a reported 83% drop from peak levels in October 2025 to the end of August 2026. This marks an acceleration from a 74% decrease observed in July, indicating a sustained positive trend in market stabilization. According to the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), this price reduction affects a wide range of essential goods, reflecting a high level of market saturation.

The substantial influx of humanitarian aid is cited as the primary driver for this economic shift. Over 2.2 million tons of food supplies have entered Gaza since a ceasefire was established. This large-scale delivery has not only increased the variety of goods available but also facilitated the restoration of critical infrastructure, including numerous public kitchens and bakeries, thereby easing the burden on vulnerable populations.

Despite the improved food availability, the situation in Gaza remains challenging due to internal control and logistical issues. Israeli military officials report that commercial activities are still hampered by artificial obstacles, such as unauthorized fees and taxes imposed by Hamas on local merchants. Furthermore, officials have highlighted instances where Hamas representatives have allegedly sabotaged food supplies, intentionally destroying stored provisions.
