Renowned Breslov Rabbi and Artist Yisrael Yitzchak Bazonson Dies at 81

Rabbi Yisrael Yitzchak Bazonson, a prominent Breslov Hasidic leader and influential figure in spreading the teachings of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, passed away at the age of 81. Known for his artistic talent and spiritual leadership, Rabbi Bazonson led the "Shir Chadash" community in Tel Aviv. He was born in France in 1944 during the Holocaust and displayed exceptional artistic promise in his youth. At 15, he experienced a profound spiritual awakening, embraced Orthodox Judaism, and studied in yeshivas in Switzerland and Belgium. He later became a devoted follower of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Bender and, with his rabbi's blessing, established a center for disseminating Hasidic teachings in Aix-les-Bains, France, in 1976. This center attracted many "baalei teshuva" (returnees to Judaism) from the French Jewish community.

Rabbi Bazonson faced personal tragedy with the sudden death of his first wife, Bracha Bashe, in 1981, leaving him with five young children. Amidst his grief, he wrote his renowned book "Courage," which addresses coping with crises based on Breslov principles. The book achieved international success, translated into seven languages and selling nearly a million copies. He later remarried Devorah, who passed away about three years ago.

In 1995, Rabbi Bazonson immigrated to Israel and settled in southern Tel Aviv, establishing the "Shir Chadash" community. This community included a study hall, a yeshiva, a Talmud Torah, charitable organizations, and a publishing house. He authored dozens of books and pamphlets on Jewish spirituality and Hasidism, including "Courage," "Hitbodedut," and "Masillat HaKsharim." He also composed devotional melodies released on albums and continued to create vibrant Judaica paintings.

Rabbi Bazonson's influence is evident in the prominent students who emerged from his teachings, including Rabbi Avraham Yifrach, Rabbi Michi Yosefi, Rabbi Doron Yitzchak Stern, Rabbi Aryeh Lifo, Rabbi Dan Levinzon, and Rabbi Yishai Friedman. In his final days, he was hospitalized and his many students prayed for his recovery, but he passed away. His funeral is scheduled to take place today in Safed, where he will be laid to rest in the ancient cemetery.
