Rabbi Binyamin Shmuel Reis, Esteemed Breslov Hasid in Jerusalem, Passes Away at 82
Rabbi Binyamin Shmuel Reis, a respected elder of the Breslov Hasidic community in Jerusalem and a longtime resident of the Ezrat Torah neighborhood, passed away on the Sabbath at the age of 82. He had been hospitalized in serious condition at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in recent weeks, where many Breslov Hasidim fervently prayed for his recovery. Born in the United States in 1943, Rabbi Reis immigrated to Israel and became a well-known figure in Jerusalem's Ezrat Torah and Mea Shearim neighborhoods. He was a devoted regular at the famous Breslov synagogue in Mea Shearim, where he engaged deeply in prayer and spiritual longing according to the traditions of past Breslov generations.
Known for his sincere devotion and joy in serving God, Rabbi Reis was deeply connected to the teachings of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, studying his holy books day and night. Throughout his life, he faced significant personal challenges with faith and love. In August 2018, he tragically lost his son, Rabbi Moshe Yaakov Reis, a fellow Breslov Hasid from Tel Tzion, who died suddenly at age 52 from cardiac arrest. Rabbi Reis accepted this loss with quiet faith and continued his spiritual work with dedication.
He leaves behind a large, righteous family including 14 children, sons-in-law, and many descendants who continue in the path of Torah and Hasidism. His passing is mourned by the Breslov community and all who knew him. May his soul be bound in the bond of life.
