Rabbi Chanoch Cohen Composes Song for His Yeshiva Alumni Network

A special preparatory gathering for Rosh Hashanah was held in Jerusalem, attended by nearly one hundred alumni of the 'Be'er HaTalmud' yeshiva. These alumni are united by the 'Kolelei Yom Shishi' (Friday Kolel) network, established about a year ago on the initiative of Rabbi Chanoch Cohen, the Rosh Yeshiva (head of the yeshiva).

The network currently comprises over ten branches across Israel, from Tiberias and Safed in the north to Netivot and Ofakim in the south. Every Friday, the alumni convene for joint study on topics of their choice, receiving a substantial stipend. The initiative aims not only to increase Torah study hours but also to maintain the bond among former classmates, who naturally do not meet during the week, and to preserve their connection to the beit midrash (study hall) and the yeshiva's spirit even after marriage.

The extensive project is managed by Rabbi David Matot, who was known for his Torah activities even during his yeshiva studies. Recognizing his capabilities, the Rosh Yeshiva entrusted him with establishing the alumni network. Rabbi Aryeh Fikel, also a yeshiva alumnus, assists him.

The event commenced with the Maariv evening prayer, followed by a festive meal. The yeshiva's Mashgiach (spiritual supervisor), Rabbi Eliyahu Aharon, spoke about the importance of unity and belonging among the group, encouraging attendees to continue growing in all aspects of Torah and reverence. Rabbi Chaim Yosef Gafner, chairman of the 'Va'ad Harabanim Le'inyanei Tzedakah' (Committee of Rabbis for Charity Matters), discussed the significance of the 'Arevim' fund and its aid to families in distress.

The highlight of the evening was the arrival of Rabbi Chanoch Cohen, the Rosh Yeshiva and president of the Kolelim. He personally engaged with his former students, showing affection and concern for each one. A particularly uplifting moment occurred when the group sang a new song composed by Rabbi Cohen specifically for the occasion. The song focuses on themes of repentance and yearning for closeness to God, interspersed with inspirational melodies and words of encouragement from Rabbi Cohen for the upcoming High Holidays, delivered in his familiar style.

During the event, new initiatives were presented to expand activities for alumni, including a set study schedule determined by the Rosh Yeshiva for the Friday Kolelim and special benefits from the yeshiva's interest-free loan fund (Gmach). Towards the end, gifts of appreciation were distributed to the heads of the branches and to all participants, who received a special prayer book for their wives, symbolizing their partnership in their husbands' Torah endeavors.

The attendees left with feelings of upliftment and renewal, the event strengthening their sense of belonging to the beit midrash and leaving a lasting impression in preparation for Rosh Hashanah and the High Holidays.
