Musician Shi Baruch Salama Releases Emotional Rendition of Classic Yeshiva Niggun

Musician Shi Baruch Salama has released a new, emotional rendition of the classic niggun (melody) 'Ani Yeshena.' The 30-year-old, a resident of Kochav Hashachar, is known for his performances at Simchat Beit HaShoeva celebrations at Yeshivat Har HaMor and for leading prayers at the Cave of the Patriarchs. His new project, timed for the Elul period leading up to the High Holy Days, features his clarinet accompanied by an uplifting choir, with musical production by Ron Hanya.

The melody, based on the verse 'I am asleep, but my heart is awake' from the Song of Songs, was originally composed by Rabbi Baruch Ber Leibowitz, the late Rosh Yeshiva of Kamenitz. It became a beloved niggun among yeshiva students, with a notable previous rendition by Aviš Bradth. Salama's personal connection to the melody began during his first year at Yeshivat Ramat Hasharon, where it opened a new spiritual world for him.

Salama shared that the niggun has accompanied him through significant life moments, including his wedding, and he finds its message universally relevant. "These verses speak to each of us: even when we feel in a state of 'sleep,' challenge, or forgetfulness, our heart is awake and desires goodness and holiness," he stated. He felt compelled to release his own musical materials, seeing it as a gift to share with the world.

While the single is released during the period of introspection and repentance, Salama views the niggun as suitable for the entire year. He hopes listeners will connect with the melody personally, reflecting on their own yearnings and their place as a people. The release aims to provide a profound musical experience that combines spiritual connection with rich sound.
