Israel Police Leadership Appointments Frozen Until Election
Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has decided to halt appointments to senior police positions until the upcoming elections on October 27. Ben-Gvir informed Police Commissioner Daniel Levi that making high-level appointments six weeks before the vote is inappropriate, as it could be perceived by some as a "power grab." The minister stated that all appointments will be suspended, except for urgent cases handled individually.
However, Israeli media reports suggest the decision is also linked to disagreements between Ben-Gvir and Levi over several personnel changes, including the position of deputy legal advisor for the police. One contentious appointment reportedly involved Tamar Liberty, whom Levi intended to appoint as his deputy for legal affairs. Sources close to Ben-Gvir referred to Liberty as the "Attorney General's choice."
Despite the minister's directive, the police reportedly continued with planned discussions on personnel decisions.
