Israel Police Chief to Announce Key Appointments After Long Vacancy

Israel Police Commissioner Danny Levy is set to announce a series of appointments to key leadership positions that have been vacant for an extended period, ending months of stagnation. The police force faces numerous external security challenges, but internal leadership gaps have also created instability.

Among the critical roles awaiting permanent appointments are the heads of the Planning Directorate, Human Resources Directorate, and the Spokesperson's Unit, along with senior field command positions. Additionally, commanders for the Sharon, Ayalon, and the newly forming Eyal districts have been pending, as has the deputy legal advisor position. These roles are central to the police's operational core, encompassing planning, human resources, public relations, and direct command of forces.

A police source sharply criticized the situation, attributing it to political interference. "The takeover by [former Justice Ministry official] Gali Baharav-Miara over the proper management of the police harms the ability to appoint officers to key positions," the source stated. "There is a power struggle between the minister, who was democratically elected and should have the final say on appointments, and the legal advisor and the Supreme Court, who have simply thwarted the possibility of appointing officers based on professional considerations."

The source added that the police's situation is "very serious" and underscored that it is occurring against a political backdrop.
