WhatsApp Faces Class-Action Lawsuit in Israel Over Account Bans

A class-action lawsuit seeking over 2.5 million shekels has been filed against WhatsApp in Israel's Lod District Court. The suit alleges that the messaging app has been abruptly blocking hundreds, and possibly thousands, of Israeli users and businesses without prior warning, explanation, or a clear appeals process.

The lawsuit was filed by attorneys Guy Ofir and Victoria Reznik on behalf of "Tick Travel," a travel company based in Rishon LeZion. Tick Travel, which relies heavily on WhatsApp for business communication and marketing, experienced three separate account suspensions within eight months, with the latest being permanent.

Plaintiffs claim the issue is not a global glitch but a phenomenon specifically affecting Israel, likely caused by an automated monitoring system mistakenly flagging legitimate accounts as violating terms of service. They argue this conduct breaches contract law, the duty of good faith, and consumer protection laws.

The suit highlights the significant power imbalance between the global tech giant and individual users or small businesses who have lost access to their digital assets. The plaintiffs are seeking court orders for WhatsApp to reinstate blocked accounts, establish a customer service system with human support and a proper appeals mechanism, compensate affected parties, and disclose data on the extent of bans in Israel in recent years.

Attorney Guy Ofir described the situation as "Kafkaesque," criticizing the lack of regulatory oversight and the authorities' failure to act against the large corporation. The court will now decide whether to proceed with the legal challenge as a fundamental review of WhatsApp's blocking policies in Israel.
