Comedian Naor Zion Criticizes Sports Broadcaster for Factual Error
Comedian Naor Zion sparked online discussion after posting a clip from a "Sports News" broadcast on Sport 5, where reporter Assaf Ackerman discussed Israeli footballers playing in Europe. Zion highlighted an inaccuracy in Ackerman's report regarding the results of Crystal Palace, the team of Israeli player Anan Khalaily. Ackerman stated on air that Khalaily's team was losing, while Zion presented evidence of Crystal Palace's recent victories, including a 1-0 win against Manchester City and a 3-2 win over Fulham.
Zion criticized the broadcast, writing on Instagram, "They can't even get a simple piece of information right." He further claimed the error was not corrected during the broadcast, stating, "They didn't even correct him, and Khalaily did win with Crystal Palace." Zion also posted a new segment titled "Misleading the Public," reiterating his criticism that the broadcaster "managed to ruin even a simple report about Khalaily winning with Crystal Palace for the first time in the Premier League."
Ackerman responded directly to Zion, acknowledging the mistake. "I did err regarding Khalaily, not because I didn't know the result, but it was an incorrect slip of the tongue that was corrected immediately afterward during the segment, as I was thinking of Oscar Gloukh, who also lost," Ackerman explained. He attributed the error to a heavy workload that day, including broadcasting three games and a segment, after spending 12 hours with his children.
Ackerman chose not to escalate the conflict, instead turning the discussion towards Zion. "I'm sure this happened to you during your performances over the years; I attended some and really enjoyed watching you on stage," he wrote. He concluded his response amicably, wishing Zion a good week and expressing pleasure that Zion watches their broadcasts. Ackerman's response confirmed Zion's pointed-out error while providing context, turning a sharp critique of sports reporting into a brief public exchange.
