Brussels Airlines Staff Can Refuse Flights to Tel Aviv Without Penalty

Employees of Belgian airline Brussels Airlines will now be able to refuse flights to Tel Aviv without facing disciplinary action, following an agreement between the company's management and labor unions. The resolution came after protests from staff who were included in flight crews for routes to Israel. Under the new arrangement, pilots and flight attendants can exercise their right to opt out of flying to Israel, with management guaranteeing no negative professional consequences.

The situation escalated after the Christian Flemish union ACV Puls announced a potential strike. The union opposed the company's decision to move the Tel Aviv route, which had only resumed in early August, from a voluntary basis to the standard flight schedule. Union representatives questioned official safety assessments for the region, noting that Belgian authorities still advise citizens against non-essential travel to Israel.

To resolve the dispute, the airline invoked its standard industry protocol for being "unfit to fly," which allows personnel to decline flights for physical or psychological reasons. A Brussels Airlines spokesperson confirmed that employees can utilize this procedure for mental distress without repercussions. A union representative expressed satisfaction with the guarantees for crew well-being but criticized Belgian authorities, stating that all commercial flights to Tel Aviv should be halted given the current circumstances.
