Brussels Airlines Pilots Can Opt Out of Flights to Israel

Brussels Airlines and its employee representatives have reached an agreement allowing pilots and cabin crew to decline flights to and from Israel without facing disciplinary action or professional repercussions. This understanding was achieved following consultations held over the weekend.

The dispute arose when the Christian-Flemish union ACV Puls threatened a strike over the airline's decision to integrate flights to Tel Aviv back into its regular schedule. Initially, the route, which resumed in early August, relied on volunteer crews. The union questioned the security conditions in Israel, citing Belgian authorities' continued advisement against non-essential travel to the country.

Despite the disagreement, Brussels Airlines continues to operate its flights to Tel Aviv as part of its normal schedule. The airline management clarified that existing aviation industry procedures allow crew members to opt out of a flight if they do not feel physically or mentally fit to perform their duties, a process known as "unfit to fly." This option, they emphasized, can be used without fear of professional consequences.

ACV Puls welcomed the clarifications, with union representative Yolinda Defieu stating that the commitments are important for staff well-being and ensuring safe working conditions. However, the union maintained its fundamental stance against the routine operation of commercial flights to Israel under current conditions, criticizing Belgian authorities for what they perceive as insufficient responsibility regarding security risks.

Flights between Brussels and Tel Aviv have continued to operate on schedule during the negotiations, with departures occurring on Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
