German Factory Fire Linked to Company's Israel Operations

A significant fire broke out at a Heidelberg Materials concrete plant in Rosbach vor der Höhe, Hesse, Germany, on the night of September 1st to 2nd. Five concrete mixer trucks were engulfed in flames, with a total of seven vehicles damaged or destroyed. No injuries were reported. Police estimate the preliminary damage at approximately 800,000 euros.

Shortly after the incident, a statement claiming responsibility appeared on the far-left platform Indymedia. The authors, identifying as "Kommunist*innen" (Communists), stated they infiltrated the plant and set fire to the mixer trucks. They cited the company's activities in Israel, specifically its subsidiary Hanson Israel's operations in the West Bank, as the primary motive. The statement also condemned Germany's support for Israel and its rearmament, linking the company's profits to the "occupation and settler violence" and the "genocide of the Palestinian population."

Police are aware of the statement and are investigating its authenticity, noting that anyone can post on Indymedia. The cause of the fire is officially undetermined, though arson is being investigated. Hesse's Interior Minister Roman Poseck called the event a "deliberate arson attack" and a "serious assault on a medium-sized business and public safety."

According to the German Jewish newspaper Jüdische Allgemeine, the perpetrators claimed to have entered the facility "on the night of the Day of Struggle Against War, from September 1 to 2." The Indymedia post was made at 8:20 AM on September 2nd, while police received the fire report around 1:10 AM, suggesting a roughly seven-hour gap. This timing is considered a potential indicator of the statement's authenticity, though police have not confirmed this.

The statement detailed Heidelberg Materials' presence in Israel since 2007 through Hanson Israel, which produces aggregate, asphalt, and concrete, including operations in the West Bank. The authors also expressed support for pro-Palestinian activists who targeted facilities of the Israeli defense company Elbit Systems.

Surveillance cameras reportedly captured two unidentified individuals entering the plant and leaving an incendiary device between the trucks, which detonated with a delay, according to Bild newspaper. This information also awaits official police confirmation. Heidelberg Materials confirmed the fire and is cooperating with the investigation, stating five mixer trucks and one front loader were damaged. The fire did not spread to the plant's buildings.

Minister Poseck also highlighted a significant increase in left-wing extremist violence in Hesse, with 44 registered crimes in 2025 compared to 15 the previous year, a 193% rise. He stated that if the extremist motive is confirmed, the incident aligns with a trend he has been warning about, and authorities will firmly suppress extremism regardless of its origin.
