Veteran Employee Sues Shufersal for NIS 430,000 After 40-Year Career Ends Abruptly

A 67-year-old former Shufersal employee, Ran Donio, is suing the Israeli supermarket chain for NIS 430,000 (approximately $115,000 USD) after his 40-year career ended abruptly. Donio began working for Shufersal in 1985 and rose through the ranks from deputy store manager to project manager for the "Smart Cart" initiative. He consistently received high performance reviews and substantial bonuses, including NIS 56,000 in 2022.

In May 2024, under new management implementing an optimization and layoff program affecting about 100 employees, Donio was called for a pre-termination hearing. His access to work systems was immediately revoked, and he was barred from the office. The stress from this event reportedly led to a health decline requiring medical attention. In January 2025, the National Insurance Institute officially recognized his resulting illness as a work-related injury.

Despite Donio being on sick leave, Shufersal proceeded with his termination in August 2025, ten months before he would reach the legal retirement age. The lawsuit alleges that Shufersal acted in bad faith, depriving Donio of his right to join the company's retiree club and its associated benefits. The claim seeks compensation for wrongful termination, emotional distress, violation of equal opportunity laws, and reimbursement for car expenses and annual bonuses.

Shufersal stated in response to media inquiries that the company had not yet received the lawsuit and would review it and respond accordingly once it is received. This case highlights potential labor disputes arising from corporate restructuring and employee rights.
