Police officers and Border Police troops in Tamra, in northern Israel, arrested a 19-year-old resident of Khan Younis who had entered Israel illegally after a dramatic foot chase through open ground near homes. The operation took place early this week during a targeted enforcement campaign aimed at finding illegal residents and related offenses.
According to police, the officers spotted a suspicious vehicle and began a routine check. When they approached, the suspect abruptly abandoned the car and ran into nearby open areas. Border Police fighters and police officers immediately pursued him, searching the area until they found him hiding in thick bushes in an attempt to evade arrest.
The suspect was taken for intensive questioning at a police station, where investigators confirmed he was a resident of Khan Younis who had infiltrated Israeli territory unlawfully. After the investigation was completed, prosecutors filed an indictment against him for illegal stay in Israel, and police also requested that he remain in custody until the end of proceedings.
Police said the fight against illegal residents and those who help them remains a top priority. They said the enforcement effort targets not only infiltration, but also related offenses such as transportation and lodging of illegal residents, and noted that activity has increased in recent weeks across the country following recent security incidents. Police said they will continue working with other security agencies to act firmly against the phenomenon.
