Border Police Neutralize Palestinian Attacker Near Western Wall

Border Police officers in Jerusalem thwarted a stabbing attack early Friday morning, just hundreds of meters from the Western Wall. Initial reports indicated that an individual with an Israeli ID entered the Old City via Damascus Gate, brandished a knife, and began pursuing Jewish civilians. The incident occurred approximately two and a half hours after a large penitential prayer service at the Western Wall, a common occurrence during the month of Elul when thousands visit the Old City for prayer.

Security forces quickly reviewed surveillance footage and relayed instructions to officers and Border Police units. At around 3:31 AM, the attacker parked his scooter near Damascus Gate and waited for about seven minutes, during which he smoked and drank water. At 3:38 AM, he entered the Old City and encountered a Border Police team near the entrance to HaGai Street. He raised a knife and attempted to stab them.

According to police, the officers responded by opening fire. One officer shot the attacker three times, causing him to fall. A subsequent security team observed the attacker attempting to rise and fired three additional shots, neutralizing the threat. No Israeli forces were injured, though two Border Police officers were treated for anxiety and tinnitus following the gunfire.

Border Police Commander Superintendent Shimon Dahan and Inspector-General of Border Police, Superintendent General Baruch Yitzhak, met with the officers involved. Yitzhak praised the officers' bravery, determination, and professionalism, stating, "A terrorist who sets out to murder civilians or harm our fighters must know one thing - Border Police fighters will pursue him, charge him, and neutralize the threat." He added, "We train our fighters for these moments. They acted tonight with courage, determination, professionalism, and values - exactly as I expect from Border Police fighters. We are on the front lines to protect the citizens of Israel, and when required, we will do so even at the risk of our lives. I fully support the fighters and am proud of them. The courage and determination they demonstrated tonight saved lives."
