Jewish Family Faces Antisemitic Abuse at Melbourne Airport

A Jewish family traveling to Israel was subjected to repeated antisemitic harassment at Melbourne Airport's international terminal on Thursday, September 3. A woman verbally abused the family, calling them "child murderers," "Zionist Nazis," and "Zionist pigs." The family included an 11-year-old girl and a one-year-old infant.

The father, who requested anonymity due to security concerns, told Australian media that the harassment occurred three times. After the initial incident, the woman confronted the man's sister, who was holding the baby and accompanied by her four-year-old daughter, near the security checkpoint. The third encounter happened after the woman had been drinking at a terminal cafe. Airport security intervened at this point.

The father stated that his 11-year-old daughter cried and the entire family was left in shock. He also revealed that since the October 7 attacks, he has instructed his children to conceal their Jewish identity in public.

Dr. Dvir Abramovich, chairman of the Australian Anti-Defamation Commission, condemned the incident and urged the Australian Federal Police to investigate and apprehend the suspect. An airport representative stated that no official complaint had been filed but condemned antisemitism, emphasizing the airport's commitment to being a safe space for everyone.
