Israel Vows 'Painful' Response to Countries Imposing Sanctions

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich declared on Thursday that Israel is preparing a range of economic and diplomatic measures against any countries that impose sanctions or restrictions on Israeli products. Speaking at a meeting with industrialists in Ma'ale Adumim, Smotrich addressed threats of sanctions, particularly from the United Kingdom and several European nations, including France.

"We have ceased to be passive actors," Smotrich stated, promising "very painful" diplomatic and economic responses. While acknowledging other states' rights to uphold their political stances, he asserted that Israel would not permit economic pressure to dictate decisions contrary to its fundamental interests.

The minister also pledged financial support for Israeli companies impacted by potential boycotts or sanctions, assuring that "the State of Israel will provide a safety net for anyone harmed," potentially through compensation.

Smotrich urged industrialists to diversify their export markets, suggesting that as one market closes, others, such as India and the United States, could open up, citing India's strong economic growth. He also highlighted the potential of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) project, believing regional geopolitical shifts could create new trade opportunities for Israel.

According to Smotrich, Israel's current stronger regional position will enhance its resilience against international pressure.
