Israel Vows Political, Economic Retaliation Against UK Sanctions

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich declared that Israel is preparing political and economic countermeasures in response to potential sanctions or restrictions by Britain and other nations. This statement comes amid escalating tensions between Israel and the UK, primarily over Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank.

Smotrich indicated that the Israeli government is developing various measures targeting any actions that could harm the Israeli economy or its companies. He pledged to establish a safety net for businesses that might be negatively impacted by such sanctions.

Furthermore, Smotrich stated Israel's intention to expand its trade relations with alternative markets, asserting, "One market will close, and other markets will open." This suggests a strategy to mitigate the effects of potential Western sanctions by diversifying economic partnerships.

The finance minister's remarks follow reports that the British government is preparing a comprehensive package of measures in response to Israel's settlement policies in the West Bank. London specifically cited the construction project in the E1 area as a threat to the viability of a contiguous Palestinian state and a detriment to the two-state solution.
