Police Spokesperson Faces Disciplinary Review Over Remarks on Opposition Leader

Israel's Police Commissioner, Danny Levy, has initiated a disciplinary review against Police Superintendent Arie Doron, the police spokesperson. The review stems from comments Doron made during an interview on Radio Galai Israel, where he described Yair Golan, the chairman of the Democratic Party, as "one of the greatest enemies of Israel."

Following Doron's remarks, attorney Gonen Ben-Yitzhak filed a petition with the High Court of Justice (Bagatz), demanding a disciplinary procedure against the spokesperson. Ben-Yitzhak stated that he had previously contacted the Police Commissioner and other senior police officials without receiving a response before resorting to legal action. The petition urged the court to order the Commissioner to explain why a disciplinary process had not been immediately launched.

The High Court had ordered the police to respond to the petition by September 2nd. Initially, the state informed the court that the complaints against Doron were under examination by the police's disciplinary department. On Wednesday, the police's legal counsel announced that a disciplinary review had commenced.

In a statement to the High Court, the police indicated that a recommendation regarding Doron's case would be formulated during the review and forwarded to the appropriate authorities for a decision on further action. The state subsequently requested the dismissal of the petition, arguing that its purpose had been fulfilled with the opening of the review, though they reserved the right to raise further arguments after a final decision is made.

No disciplinary measures have yet been decided upon, pending the completion of the investigation, the formulation of a recommendation, and a final decision by the police leadership.
