Israel Frees Lebanese Prisoners Amid US-Mediated Negotiations

Israel is preparing to release five Lebanese prisoners on Thursday, a move coordinated with the United States as part of ongoing indirect negotiations between Lebanon and Israel. These talks aim to resolve outstanding issues, particularly concerning prisoners, detainees, and missing persons. Israeli Channel 12 reported the release as an "Israeli gesture within the framework of negotiations between the two countries." The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) confirmed it received one Lebanese national from Israeli custody at the Naqoura crossing and handed him over to the Lebanese army, signaling the commencement of the prisoner exchange.

The release is part of broader U.S.-mediated discussions that have included the exchange of initial lists of detainees and missing individuals. Lebanon has reportedly requested that the release of civilian detainees be the first step in addressing the issue, viewing humanitarian aspects as a gateway to wider understandings. This development follows previous progress reported in August, where Lebanese General Joseph Aoun noted "positive" advancements in the prisoner file.

The prisoner release coincides with what Israeli Channel 12 described as a "failed" experimental operation in southern Lebanon, where responsibility was transferred to the Lebanese army to remove Hezbollah from the area. This context highlights the ongoing efforts to establish security arrangements in southern Lebanon alongside border and humanitarian issues.

This is not the first such exchange; Israel released five Lebanese prisoners in March 2025, also coordinated with the U.S., during progress on border issues. The recurring nature of these releases underscores Washington's role in managing the process. The prisoner issue remains a key focus for Lebanon, with the potential for further releases to advance broader negotiations.
