Police Investigate Dozens Over Illegal Minor Marriages in Yavniel

Police in Israel's Northern District conducted raids on Thursday in the community of Yavniel, located in the Lower Galilee, detaining dozens of individuals suspected of involvement in underage marriages over recent months. Among those detained were 16 minors and adults from their close circle, who are suspected of recently marrying or making concrete preparations for illegal wedding ceremonies.

The police are engaged in an ongoing struggle against the phenomenon of child marriage, which is occurring illegally within a small, closed community primarily based in Yavniel. This operation follows a similar raid approximately two and a half months ago, which resulted in the detention of over 20 suspects. Thursday's operation saw dozens more detained.

These clandestine weddings typically take place in the morning with a limited number of attendees. The location is not revealed until the last moment, and photography is prohibited to prevent documentation of the ceremonies. Following the religious ceremony, a public event often disguised as an "engagement party" is held for extended family and friends.

The police stated, "Israel Police will continue to act decisively against any offense that harms minors and the helpless, including offenses related to illegal child marriages. The investigation conducted in recent months in the Northern District is part of an ongoing struggle to protect the well-being, safety, and rights of minors. Israel Police will continue to investigate this matter thoroughly and professionally, in cooperation with all law enforcement and welfare agencies, to uncover the truth, prosecute those involved, and prevent the continuation of this phenomenon."
