Dozens Arrested in Northern Israel Over Suspected Underage Marriages

Police conducted a large-scale operation in the town of Yavniel on Thursday, arresting dozens of individuals suspected of involvement in illegal underage marriages. The investigation, ongoing for several months, targets a small, closed community primarily based in Yavniel. During the morning raid, 16 minors and adults were detained for questioning. Authorities suspect that some individuals have recently married, while others were in the advanced stages of planning illegal wedding ceremonies.

This operation is a continuation of a previous sweep conducted several weeks ago, where over 20 suspects were detained for similar offenses in the same town. According to police, a specific method is being employed to conceal these ceremonies, making them difficult to locate and document. The weddings are reportedly held early in the morning with a limited number of attendees, and the location is not disclosed in advance. Participants are sometimes forbidden from taking photos or bringing mobile phones to prevent documentation.

Police further allege that after the religious ceremony, a separate event is often held for a larger group of relatives and guests, presented externally as an "engagement party." The investigation is ongoing, involving law enforcement and welfare agencies, with the aim of preventing further instances of underage marriage and determining the extent of all suspects' involvement. The police emphasized their commitment to combating offenses against minors and vulnerable individuals, including illegal underage marriages.
