Police Raid Northern Town, Investigate Suspects in Underage Marriages

Dozens of police officers from the Northern District raided multiple locations in the town of Yavniel, near Tiberias, on Thursday morning. The operation targeted individuals suspected of facilitating marriages involving minors in recent months. Yavniel is a town inhabited by religious Jewish communities.

The police stated the campaign is part of an effort to combat underage marriages, with suspicions that such ceremonies were conducted within a closed community in the town. This follows a previous investigation several weeks ago where over 20 individuals were questioned for alleged involvement in underage marriages in Yavniel. On Thursday, 16 individuals, both minors and adults, were brought in for questioning.

According to police, these underage marriage ceremonies often take place in the morning with a small number of attendees. The location is not disclosed in advance, and photography or mobile phone use is prohibited. A subsequent event, disguised as a "betrothal party" for relatives of the bride and groom, is sometimes held to conceal the earlier ceremony.
