Police Arrest 16 in Israeli Village Over Suspected Underage Marriages

Police conducted a raid in the village of Yavniel on Thursday, detaining 16 individuals, both minors and adults, on suspicion of involvement in underage marriages or preparations for illegal ceremonies. This operation, carried out by the Northern District Police, is part of an ongoing effort to combat the phenomenon of child marriage within a small, closed community in the Lower Galilee.

This marks the second wave of arrests in Yavniel concerning underage marriages, following a previous operation in June where over 20 suspects were detained. According to police, these clandestine weddings often occur in the morning with a limited number of attendees, and their locations are not disclosed until the last moment. To avoid evidence, participants refrain from photography and using mobile phones during the ceremonies. Following the religious ceremony, a separate event, often disguised as an engagement party, may be held for a wider audience.

The issue of underage marriages in Yavniel has gained significant media attention recently, particularly after reports of teenage girls from the community giving birth in nearby hospitals. Police acknowledge the difficulty in enforcement due to the secretive nature of the ceremonies, noting that participants avoid explicit documentation like wedding invitations or a public chuppah ceremony to prevent legal evidence.

Merav Cohen, Chairwoman of the Committee for the Advancement of the Status of Women, praised the police's complex investigation and vowed to pursue all offenders involved in the abuse of minors. Cohen recently visited Yavniel after learning that a school principal allegedly married off her own underage daughter to a member of the community. During her visit, Cohen's aide reported being pushed and nearly assaulted by a local employee.
