Israeli Police Arrest 16 in Crackdown on Underage Weddings in Hassidic Community

Police in the northern Israeli town of Yavne'el have apprehended 16 individuals suspected of organizing and facilitating marriages involving minors. The arrests are part of an ongoing effort to combat the practice of underage weddings within a local community of Breslov Hassidim. Those detained are accused of entering into or preparing for illegal unions with underage individuals.

Law enforcement officials stated that the operation is part of a sustained campaign against early marriages in Yavne'el. A similar operation conducted several weeks prior resulted in the questioning of over 20 people. Police believe these ceremonies are conducted discreetly, often in the morning with few attendees, and without prior disclosure of the location. To further conceal the nature of the events, photography and mobile phones are typically prohibited.

Following the religious ceremony, separate events are often held and presented as "engagement parties" to disguise the fact that a marriage has occurred, according to investigators. Notably, one woman known for her activism against early marriages was arrested on suspicion of attempting to marry off her own underage daughter.

The issue gained significant public attention after reports emerged of underage girls from the community giving birth in nearby hospitals. In one instance, a 16-year-old resident gave birth at Ha'Emek Medical Center in Afula, with social services notified as required by law.

The problem has reached the Knesset, Israel's parliament. A report from the Knesset Research Center indicated 321 registered cases of underage marriages without proper authorization between 2023 and 2025. However, during the same period, prosecutors filed only four indictments, highlighting the challenges in gathering sufficient evidence to prove marriages occurred, as participants may claim the events were merely engagements.
