Turkey Expands Military Presence in Syria, Building Bridge Over Euphrates

Turkish forces advanced into the eastern Syrian province of Deir ez-Zor over the weekend, establishing a floating bridge across the Euphrates River approximately 180 kilometers from the Turkish-Syrian border. The operation, which occurred without an immediate Israeli military response, saw Turkish troops coordinating with the Syrian army in the Al-Mayadin area. Turkish drones provided aerial surveillance and protection during the construction, which included testing the bridge's capacity for armored vehicles.

This move follows recent Israeli declarations that it would not permit Turkey to increase its military footprint in Syria or advance further south. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously warned Ankara after an Israeli airstrike on the Abu al-Duhur airbase, located about 70 kilometers from the Turkish border.

Experts suggest Israel is facing American pressure to avoid escalating tensions with Turkey. Israeli security assessments indicate that the critical threshold for Turkey's military presence is not geographical distance but the nature of its deployment, such as the installation of advanced air defense systems or radar, or the establishment of permanent bases that could impede Israeli Air Force operations.
