Turkey Expands Control in Syria, Facilitates Iranian Arms Smuggling via Iraq Border
Kurdish sources and human rights organizations report that Turkey is strengthening its control over strategic border areas between Syria and Turkey. According to a former Kurdish military official, pro-Turkish factions integrated into Syria's new army under President Ahmad al-Sharaa are enabling the smuggling of Iranian weapons across the border with Iraq. Kurdish human rights groups note that Turkey's military presence in the region began in 2016, but they claim Ankara is now effectively turning parts of Syria into a "Turkish province." The former Kurdish official shared intelligence with the United States about these pro-Turkish factions facilitating arms trafficking, but the US has reportedly shown little interest in addressing the issue.
