Man in Disguise Attacked Victim on Way to Prayer Service

A 66-year-old man was critically injured in Afula, Israel, after being stabbed multiple times by a 39-year-old suspect who allegedly disguised himself in secular clothing to approach the victim. The attack occurred around 4:15 AM as the victim was walking to a synagogue for Selichot prayers, a penitential service recited before the High Holy Days. The assailant, described as a Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) man, reportedly wore "secular" attire to conceal his identity and intentions.

The victim fought back, pretending to be dead, which caused the attacker to flee. He was subsequently taken to HaEmek Hospital in serious condition. Police investigators from the Northern District quickly responded, collected evidence, and launched a wide-scale search. Two days later, the suspect was apprehended.

Investigators believe the motive for the attack stems from a past case involving sexual offenses against minors, perpetrated by a prominent rabbi from the Afula area. The victim had been involved in reporting that led to the rabbi's conviction and imprisonment. Authorities suspect the attacker, a follower of the convicted rabbi, acted out of revenge.

The suspect's detention was extended by the Nazareth Magistrate's Court, and the investigation into the attempted murder continues. The suspect reportedly entered a shelter dressed as a secular person, changed into Haredi attire, and then left.
