IDF Recruits Haredi Brigade Amid Protests and Strict Religious Standards

The Israeli military is enlisting new soldiers for the Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) "Hasmonean" brigade, a process marked by significant external pressure and internal adherence to strict religious observance. Outside the recruitment center at Tel HaShomer, protesters attempted to dissuade young men from enlisting, creating a tense atmosphere.

Inside the base, however, the military aims to create a "bubble" ensuring a religiously uncompromising environment for the Haredi recruits. Sergeant Major Moshe Baruch, head of Haredi recruitment for the Hasmonean brigade, described the stark contrast between the external protests and the internal operations. He noted that recruits often face direct appeals from demonstrators urging them not to enter.

Baruch emphasized the recruitment team's focus on providing individual guidance and alleviating the natural concerns of young men unfamiliar with military life. He highlighted the brigade's core mission: integrating combat service with Torah study and regular prayer.

Addressing concerns about maintaining religious standards, Baruch asserted that the process is meticulously designed to prevent friction. "From the moment the Haredi recruit enters the recruitment center, the event is completely sterile," he stated. "There are no women, everything is conducted according to Halakha (Jewish law) and the required reverence for God."

This religious adherence extends beyond initial enlistment. After receiving uniforms and equipment, recruits proceed directly to the Hasmonean brigade's training base, also designated as a completely sterile environment. There, they will undergo basic training, advanced training, and eventually join operational service.

Despite public tensions and a limited presence of politicians, Baruch expressed optimism about the brigade's future, indicating a growing number of recruits and overall growth for the unit. This enlistment day is the first of several, with another scheduled soon for those who couldn't complete the process. The initiative reflects an institutional effort to establish a service path that allows integration into the war effort without compromising the spiritual and Halakhic principles of Haredi soldiers.
