IDF Prepares for Record High Haredi Recruitment Next Week

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is preparing for a recruitment day next week that is expected to see over 500 Haredi (ultra-Orthodox Jewish) recruits, marking a significant increase compared to last August when only 375 Haredim enlisted. Of the anticipated recruits, approximately 300 will serve in combat roles, while the remainder will fill combat support positions.

This surge continues a broader upward trend in Haredi enlistment, with about 4,300 recruits in the past year compared to 2,800 the previous year. However, these numbers remain low relative to the estimated potential pool of around 14,000 eligible Haredi youths per recruitment cycle, most of whom currently do not enlist. The IDF faces a critical shortage of soldiers overall, making this increase particularly important.

Several factors contribute to the rise in enlistment. Economic and legal sanctions against draft evaders in the Haredi community have played a key role. Additionally, the IDF has adapted its policies and infrastructure to better accommodate Haredi soldiers, including appointing a dedicated advisor to the Chief of Staff on Haredi affairs, creating specialized courses and units, and providing extensive support for integration and post-service education.

Above all, the IDF highlights a shift in mindset among Haredi youth themselves, who increasingly wish to contribute to national security and actively participate in military service. The upcoming recruitment day on Sunday is expected to further this positive trend, although the IDF acknowledges that much work remains to meet the full enlistment potential within the Haredi sector.
